This forum is running Discourse, and in this series of posts I'm going to be talking about tips for getting the most out of it. Without further ado..
Part I: Markdown
All of the text you enter into the forum will be parsed as Markdown, a simple syntax for formatting text. It's super simple and easy to use. The window on the left is where you type, the window on the right is your live preview of how your post will look, markdown parsed. Here're the details:
Any line that starts with a
# will be treated as a "header," like the word "Headers:" up there. Use more than one
# to make a sub-header (smaller, less bold, etc). For example, to get the above header I typed:
Bold and Italic:
Text surrounded in
* will be Italic. Text surrounded in
** will be bold. For example:
*italic text* yields italic text
**bold text** yields bold text
If you want to quote something, just put a
> in front of each line of text you're quoting. For example:
>this is a quote
>on two lines
this is a quote
on two lines
To add a link, follow this pattern:
[linked text](destination_url). For example:
[click here](http://example.org) gives you click here.
To link to a picture hosted elsewhere, you use a similar format to a link:
![alt-text](image_url). Of course, the easiest way to include an image is to drag and drop.
Everybody likes emoji and there are plenty of s in here - just type a
: and the emoji menu will come up - keep typing and it will filter down to what you want. A complete list of available emoji is here.
To get a list, simple start each line of the list with a
* and then put in your item's text. For example:
Same as normal lists, except you put a
1. in front of the lines instead of a
Pro Tip: You can put the numbers in yourself, but it will automatically correct them if they're not in order, so you can use all 1s if you want.
To get text that doesn't get other formatting applied to it, wrap it in
`s. (This is how I got all the examples to work on this post).
If you want a nice big line separating your text, put in a
--- on a line by itself.
Thanks for reading, Part II is coming soon, and will be...Polls!
